Fibre

A core pillar of our ethos is an investment in science. As such, we run both independent, clinical studies and real-world consumer studies. Together, these help us ensure that our products are safe, effective, and meaningful for our community.

We’ve just completed our first consumer study on Essential Fibre+, and are excited to share the results with you

Study Design

The trial enrolled 60 healthy men and women, aged 25-60, who maintained their usual lifestyle practices during the study period. Individuals who are currently taking weight loss medications were excluded from the trial due to their potential impact on gastric emptying. Over the course of four weeks, participants were asked to take one, 7g serving of Essential Fibre+ each morning on an empty stomach. Data was collected through surveys that were sent to participants at the end of each week, which tracked bowel movements using the Bristol Stool Scale, and other parameters including bloating, cravings, appetite, energy, and mood.

Study Results

After week one:

  • 75% of participants reported positive change in bowel movements

  • 52% of participants reported a reduction in cravings

  • 45% of participants felt less bloated

By the end of week four:

  • 91% of participants reported a positive change in bowel movements

  • 87% of participants felt less bloated

  • 83% of participants reported a better feeling of overall wellbeing

  • 79% of participants reported a reduction in cravings

  • And 95% of participants feel more confident in achieving the recommended daily intake of fibre

Why it Works  Fibre Diversity

The formula is a blend of seven plant fibres and 4 botanicals, each with their own unique properties. PHGG, psyllium husk, and pectin each target digestive health through complementary mechanisms, making them an effective trio for addressing bowel regularity, feelings of bloat, and overall gut wellbeing. PHGG is a gentle yet powerful prebiotic fibre: it feeds beneficial gut bacteria, supports the gut lining, and increases short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, all of which nurture a thriving microbiome and digestive balance. Notably, PHGG is low-FODMAP and clinically shown to reduce bloating and support regularity, (1) making it highly tolerable and effective for sensitive individuals. Psyllium husk, a soluble, gel-forming fibre, helps both soften hard stools and firm loose stools, which helps restore digestive rhythm without excessive fermentation or gas. Its ability to retain water provides stool normalisation, supports SCFA production, and encourages microbial diversity for barrier integrity and overall digestive resilience. (2) Pectin, one of the main fibres found in fruit, is another soluble fibre that gently nourishes beneficial bacteria, supports steady digestive transit, and enhances regularity while maintaining a healthy gut balance. (3) Together, these fibres target gut comfort, regularity, and work to optimise the microbiome.

Arabinogalactan, beta glucans, and green banana flour are standout functional fibres that work in synergy for gut comfort, beneficial bacterial balance, appetite regulation and overall digestive health. Arabinogalactan is a gentle prebiotic that selectively nourishes beneficial gut bacteria, supporting a balanced microbiome while promoting immune health and creating a calm, resilient gut environment. Beta glucans act as soluble prebiotic fibres that feed protective gut bacteria, enhance gut barrier integrity, and stimulate short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production. They seem to especially promote a type of SCFA called butyrate, which strengthens the gut lining and modulates immune balance. (4) Green banana flour delivers resistant starch, a slow-digesting prebiotic fibre that fuels beneficial microbes and gently evens out digestion. By slowing carbohydrate absorption and driving SCFA production, green banana flour helps to stabilise energy and maintain gut comfort. Collectively, these ingredients build a strong foundation for digestive wellness, tackling bloating, irregularity, and gut resilience without harsh effects.

Why it works: Synergistic Herbs

Chamomile, ginger, mandarin fruit extract, and fennel are well-researched botanicals and have longstanding traditional uses for digestion, bloating, and overall gut health. Chamomile stands out as a gentle but effective herb that calms the digestive tract, relaxes smooth muscle, and supports gut comfort, particularly when stress and sensitivity are triggers. (5) Ginger has so many beneficial properties and is particularly active in the gut. Its active compounds, called gingerols, naturally stimulate motility, encourage gastric emptying, and ease feelings of bloat by supporting movement through the digestive system. (6) Mandarin fruit extract provides a natural source of vitamin C, antioxidants, and soothing phytonutrients that support gut integrity, rebalance the microbiome, and combat oxidative stress, which is important for both gut and immune well-being. And finally, Fennel is a time-tested remedy for easing post-meal bloating and discomfort: its compounds relax digestive muscles, help trapped gas move through the intestines. It’s also been well-studied for its impact on blood sugar balance: in both animal and human studies, fennel has been shown to reduce fasting blood glucose and improve insulin sensitivity. (7)

Why it Works: Dietary Patterns

Only 1 in 10 adults in the UK consume the recommended 30g of fibre per day, and average intake is 18g. Fibre is one of the most important nutrients for both our daily energy and long-term health; it keeps us feeling full, naturally supporting appetite and cravings, is essential for regularity, and feeds the microbiome, which we now know is linked to virtually every aspect of health, including immunity, mood, energy and more. Because of this, working towards a high-quality, consistent diet with enough fibre is one of the most important things we can do for our health. But, this can be hard, and it can take months to years to adopt consistent habits, which is one of the reasons Essential Fibre+ can support you. In speaking to the community, I know that many of you feel the pressure of what the ideal diet should look like – with work, travel, the food environment and family commitments, it is often hard to get enough of everything you need. My hope is that Essential Fibre+ can help you bridge this gap and allow you to reap the full benefits of a routine that is high in fibre - it has certainly helped me.

Whilst this trial was one month long, for best results we recommend three months of consistency so that your body has time to adapt and feel the full benefits. From there, you can choose to use this product daily to support your gut and fibre intake, keep it handy for days you know you’ll struggle to get enough, or to push your number above the RDA and towards the optimal intake.

Wishing you the best in health,
