Have you ever noticed this pattern?
You grab a muffin or pastry with your morning coffee, feel energised for an hour, then suddenly you're tired, hungry and searching for something sweet again. By mid-afternoon you're reaching for chocolate or biscuits, and the cycle repeats itself.
This is what's often referred to as the blood sugar rollercoaster.
When we eat foods high in refined carbohydrates or sugar without enough protein, fibre or healthy fats, blood glucose rises quickly. In response, the pancreas releases insulin to move glucose from the bloodstream into our cells, where it can be used for energy.
If blood sugar rises rapidly, it can also fall more quickly afterwards. For some people, this drop can leave them feeling tired, irritable, hungry and craving another quick source of energy, often sugary foods. While everyone's response is different, repeatedly choosing highly refined foods can make it harder to maintain steady energy and appetite throughout the day. (7)
The encouraging news is that sugar cravings aren't just about what you eat. Factors such as stress, sleep, restrictive dieting and meal composition all influence your blood sugar and the hormones that regulate hunger.
Here is 5 common reasons your body may be asking for sugar.
1. You're Stressed
What's happening?
When you're stressed, your body releases cortisol, yep this is the "stress hormone." Cortisol prepares your body to respond to a challenge by making more energy available, increasing appetite and, in many people, heightening the appeal of foods that are high in sugar and fat.
Stress can also make us more likely to skip meal preparation, eat on the go or seek comfort foods that provide temporary pleasure. (1)
