When are supplements most useful?
At ARTAH, we encourage you to view supplements as tools, not shortcuts. They are most powerful when they sit on top of a solid foundation of nutrition, not instead of it.
Our approach is practitioner-led and evidence-informed, which means every formula is created to support a real problem, using ingredients and doses with a clear rationale behind them, all borne from our experience in clinical practice.
How we use supplements.
Supplements can have the greatest impact at key stages in your health journey.
-
To correct a deficiency.
Sometimes, diet alone isn’t enough to restore low levels of key nutrients. Iron and vitamin D, two of the most common deficiencies, are clear examples where targeted supplementation can be vital to rebuild stores and support normal physiological function. In fact, UK guidance recommends that all adults take a daily vitamin D supplement during autumn and winter, when it’s not possible to maintain adequate levels from sunlight and diet alone.
-
To fill a dietary gap.
Modern lifestyles, dietary preferences, and increased demands mean even a “healthy” diet can fall short in certain areas. Magnesium, omega-3 fats, vitamin A, choline, zinc, and fibre are typical nutrients where many people – especially women – aren't consistently meeting optimal intakes through food alone, especially in plant-leaning or time-poor diets. In these cases, supplements are a great way to help bridge the gap while you work on making sustainable changes to your plate, or if the gap is ongoing, to support your body long-term.
-
To support a life stage.
Different phases of life come with different physiological demands. Preconception and pregnancy require increased intakes of key micronutrients; breastfeeding and the early months of recovery place significant, ongoing demands on your body; perimenopause and post-menopause bring shifts in metabolism, bone density and mood; and intense periods of stress can change what you need to feel and function well. Our goal is to provide formulations that respond to these needs without overcomplicating your routine.
-
To support a performance goal.
Whether your goal is physical (strength, endurance, body composition) or emotional (focus, resilience, mood), there are nutrients and compounds that can meaningfully support performance. Creatine, electrolytes, omega-3s, and select nootropics and adaptogens are examples with established evidence in these areas. We formulate with the intention that you can feel the difference in how you perform, whether you’re on the track, in the boardroom, or simply moving through your day.
-
To optimise, not just normalise.
Health is more than the absence of disease. Once the fundamentals are in place and your lifestyle is dialled in, supplements can be used more strategically to optimise gut health, energy, metabolic health, cognitive functionand healthy ageing. This is where precision in formulation, effective dosing and intelligent synergy between ingredients really matters – and where we do our best work.
How Not To Use Supplements
Just as important as when to supplement is when not to.
-
Supplements are not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle.
No capsule or powder can compensate for 100% ultra-processed diets and minimal movement. We design our products to amplify the impact of positive behaviours, not to replace them, or to fill targeted nutrient gaps. If you need help with the fundamentals, you can explore nutrition programmes HERE.
-
Supplements are not medicines, not should they replace medical advice.
Food supplements are regulated as foods, which means they are intended to support health, not to diagnose, treat, or prevent disease. They should never be used as a substitute for appropriate medical care or prescribed treatment, and we do not make medicinal claims for any of our products.
-
More is not always better.
Layering multiple products “just in case,” using megadoses, or taking more than the recommended dosages without professional advice can increase the risk of nutrient imbalances, interactions or simply wasted effort. We advocate for targeted, purposeful supplementation: the right product, at the right dose, for the right period of time. Need help with your stack? No problem.
