FAQs

What is prebiotic fibre?

Prebiotic fibre is a type of dietary fibre that acts as nourishment for friendly bacteria in the gut microbiome, which ferment these fibres to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs help stimulate muscle contractions in the colon, regulate fluid absorption, and soften stool, making it easier to pass. As a result, prebiotics help support bowel movements and promote comfortable, consistent digestion without causing excess gas or discomfort. This process supports a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which is linked to improved digestion, a stronger immune system, and better overall health.

Why should I take Essential Fibre+?

Most of us don’t get enough fibre in their diets, which can lead to digestive discomfort, sluggish bowel movements, poor appetite control and an undernourished gut microbiome. A high-fibre supplement like Essential Fibre+ can make it easier to reach our daily targets, especially for those with busy lifestyles, those who practice intermittent fasting, or those who have a dietary gap. You can take Essential Fibre+ if you want to:

  • Promote regular, fulfilling bowel movements
  • Feed beneficial gut bacteria to support a diverse and healthy microbiome
  • Improve digestive comfort and reduce feelings of bloat
  • Increase fibre in your diet to help you feel more full and satisfied
  • Support long-term health
When and how should I take it?

The full dose is 1 tbsp OR 3x ARTAH Scoops, added to 500ml water before breakfast. Start with 1/2 this dosage and gradually work your way up to the full dose. Best taken on an empty stomach. The full dose delivers 7g of fibre.

Are there any side effects?

Prebiotic fibre absorbs water, so it's important to increase your water intake when you start the product. If your diet is very low in fibre, or you have digestive complaints, start with 1/2 the recommended serving and work your way up in line with your comfort. Increasing fibre too quickly can cause slight digestive discomfort, however, since this product only uses low FODMAP fibre this is rare.

What does it taste like?

This product is all natural with no artificial colours or flavourings added. The taste is slightly tart, with subtle spice from the herbs and plant extracts. This product contains both soluble and insoluble fibre, so it won't fully dissolve in water. This is normal and nothing to worry about!

What can I expect?

You can expect to see bowel changes quite quickly. Whilst fibre is great for promoting a full and satisfying bowel movement, it won't cause you to make dashes to the bathroom. It's a non-urgent formula, giving you plenty of notice. Fibre promotes feelings of satiety and can make you feel more full than usual, so don't be alarmed if your appetite changes.

Has this product been third party tested?

Yes, all of our products are third party tested for purity, contamination and label claims, so you can trust what you're putting in your body.

What is PHGG and What Does it Do?

PHGG stands for Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum, a type of soluble dietary fibre made from the guar bean. It’s created by breaking down guar gum into smaller chains, which
makes it easier to mix into liquids and gentler on digestion than the original
fibre.

Once consumed, PHGG acts mainly in the gut. It dissolves in water to form a soft
gel-like substance, which helps feed beneficial gut bacteria. Because of this,
it’s considered a prebiotic fibre - meaning it supports the growth of healthy microbes in your digestive system. These bacteria then produce helpful compounds like short-chain fatty acids, which are linked to better gut lining health and improved digestion.

In practical terms, PHGG is often used to help regulate bowel movements
(supporting both constipation and sometimes diarrhoea), improve overall gut
balance, and increase daily fibre intake without causing as much bloating as
some other fibres. It’s also used in medical nutrition because it’s generally
well tolerated and easy to incorporate into drinks or foods.

What is Psyllium Husk and What Does it Do?

Psyllium husk is a natural form of soluble
fibre taken from the outer coating (husk) of the seeds of the plant Plantago ovata. When you mix psyllium husk with water, it absorbs liquid and turns into a thick, gel-likesubstance. It helps regulate bowel movements by adding bulk and softening stool, which can relieve constipation. At the same time, it can also help with loose stools by absorbing excess water, making it useful for overall bowel regularity rather than just one direction.

Because it slows digestion, psyllium can help stabilise blood sugar levels after meals and may also help lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by binding to bile acids in the gut so they are removed from the body. The liver then uses cholesterol to make more bile, which can gradually reduce blood cholesterol levels.

In simple terms, psyllium husk acts like a gel-forming fibre that
smooths out digestion and supports both gut function and metabolic health. It’s
effective, but it needs to be taken with plenty of water - without enough
fluid, it can have the opposite effect and cause discomfort or blockage.

What are the Different Types and Fibre and Why are They Important?

Dietary fibre is the part of plant foods that your body can’t fully digest, but it
plays a major role in keeping your digestive system and even your wider health working
properly. There are two main types, and most fibre-rich foods contain a mix of
both. Soluble fibre dissolves in water to form a gel-like substance in your gut. It helps slow digestion, which can support steadier blood sugar levels and help lower cholesterol by binding to it in the digestive tract. It also feeds beneficial gut bacteria, making it an important prebiotic fibre. Foods like oats, beans, apples, and
psyllium are rich in soluble fibre.

Insoluble fibre does not dissolve in water. Instead, it adds bulk to stool and helps food move more efficiently through the digestive system. This is especially important for
preventing constipation and supporting regular bowel movements. You’ll find it
in foods like whole grains, nuts, seeds, and vegetable skins.

Both types are important because they work together - one helps regulate and nourish
the internal gut environment, while the other keeps everything moving smoothly.

Why Is Fibre So Crucial To Gut Health And If I Eat Under The RDA What Can I Expect To Notice?

Fibre is crucial for gut health because it does two big jobs at once: it keeps the digestive system physically moving and it feeds the ecosystem of microbes living in your gut (your gut microbiome). Those microbes aren’t just passive passengers - they help break down food components, produce beneficial compounds (like short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate), support the gut lining, and influence inflammation and
immune function.

When you eat enough fibre, it acts like a steady supply of “fuel” for beneficial
bacteria. In return, they help maintain a healthier gut environment, support
regular bowel movements, and contribute to a stronger intestinal barrier

If you consistently eat below the recommended daily intake (around 30g/day for adults in the UK, depending on guidelines), you might notice a few effects over time:

You may have slower or less regular bowel movements, since there’s less bulk and
water-holding capacity in the stool. Some people experience constipation or harder stools, or other G.I related symptoms like bloating, gas, indigestion, acid reflux, burping and uncomfortable fullness post meal. Because lower fibre intake also means less
“food” for beneficial bacteria, the microbiome can become less diverse over
time, which can also affect immune function, skin, energy, appetite and blood
sugar control.

Super combination of high quality ingredients for that much needed fibre support solution that just ticks so many boxes. Hello increased satiety and a winning-at-life sense of regularity. Getting the basics right, gently. Pleasant taste is a bonus.
